Hannah Höch. Millions Of Views

    @Bröhan-Museum Berlin, from 16 February — 15 May 2022

    Hannah Höch (1889–1978) went down in history as a Dada icon. Above all, she is known for her photo collages critically examining the political and social environment. Yet her work also reveals the autonomous artistic statement of an extraordinary personality. With over 120 works – some of which have not been shown for a long time or ever before – representing all creative areas and periods, this exhibition illuminates the entire spectrum of an oeuvre that is as versatile as it is contradictory. The works on loan come from prominent international and national museums, institutions, and private collections.

    Höch took the liberty of switching between artistic styles across all ideological divides, each time according to the subject matter at hand. This not only means that in Höch’s work one finds poster designs as well as paintings; she also combines fine art and applied art in in some of her pieces. In the exhibition, the works appear side by side on an equal footing, fully in keeping with the intention of their creator. Enabling “millions and millions of views” – as Höch put it in a poem – was the aim of her art. She achieved an unequaled artistic freedom and variety. The show seeks to address, for the first time, precisely this aspect of Höch’s work.
